Professional photography: why it changes everything for renting a villa in Marrakech
By Robin Moreau
Why do photos matter more than the description?
Because travellers decide within seconds, based on the cover images, before even opening the property's full listing.
On booking platforms, a listing first appears as a thumbnail with one or two photos. That thumbnail determines whether a traveller clicks through or moves on to the next listing — the description, however well written, only comes into play afterwards.
Two comparable villas, at the same rate and in the same neighbourhood, can show very different click-through rates based purely on the quality of their cover photo.
What sets professional photography apart from a phone photo?
Light, framing and timing — a professional photographer shoots at the hours when natural light shows the property at its best, not whenever happens to be convenient.
Morning or late-afternoon light, often called golden light, reveals the volumes and colours of a façade or garden far better than the harsh light of midday. A professional plans the shoot around the property's orientation, not their own schedule.
Styling matters too: an uncluttered room, a set table, a pool free of stray toys — small details that, added together, completely change how a property reads in photos.
Finally, well-controlled wide-angle framing gives a faithful sense of space, without the exaggerated distortion some phones produce in ultra-wide mode, which can actually make rooms look cramped once guests arrive in person.
Which photos are essential in a villa listing?
The façade or pool as the cover photo, then living areas, bedrooms, the main bathroom and the outdoor spaces — in an order that tells a natural story of the property.
The cover photo needs to catch the eye instantly: a pool, a terrace, a distinctive façade. Next come the living areas, which set the tone for the stay, then bedrooms and bathrooms, which reassure guests about real comfort.
Outdoor spaces — garden, pool, terrace, view — deserve particular attention in Marrakech: this is often what sets a villa apart from a plain city apartment, and what travellers look for first.
How often should a property's photos be refreshed?
After any renovation or significant redecoration, and at minimum every two to three years, so the listing stays true to the property's actual condition.
Dated photos, or ones that no longer quite match the property, create a gap the moment guests arrive — one of the most common sources of lukewarm reviews, even when the property itself is excellent.
This is something we build into managing every property: professional photography and listing optimisation are part of our included services, so the listing always does justice to the real property.
